15th Army Group / Allied Armies Italy
This Army Group controlled all Allied forces in Italy from September 1943 until May 1945. It was known as 15th Army Group from September 1943 to January 1944, then as Allied Armies in Italy from March 1944 until December 1944, when it reverted to its original name.
Fifth (US) Army
This army served in Italy from September 1943 until May 1945.
Eighth Army
This army served in Italy from September 1943 until May 1945.
British Corps
5th Corps
This corps served in Italy from September 1943 until May 1945. It landed at Taranto and advanced up the Adriatic coast, including the Sangro campaign. In 1944, it took part in the breakthrough of the Gustav Line at Cassino and the subsequent advance to the Gothic Line. It took part in the assault on the Gothic Line and, in April 1945, took part in the final offensive.
10th Corps
This corps served in Italy from September 1943 until December 1944. It landed at Salerno and took part in the advance to the Gustav Line and the initial Cassino battles. Later in 1944, it took part in the advance to the Gothic Line, where it had a primarily defensive role. In December 1944, it was transferred to Greece.
13th Corps
This corps served in Italy from September 1943 until May 1945. It crossed from Sicily and took part in the advance on the Adriatic coast, including the Moro campaign. In 1944, it took part in the breakthrough of the Gustav Line at Cassino and the advance to the Gothic Line. After defensive operations in the Apennines, it took part in the final offensive in April 1945.
Canadian Corps
1st Canadian Corps
This corps served in Italy from November 1943 until February 1945. It became operational in January 1944, serving initially on the Adriatic coast before taking part in the breakthrough of the Gustave Line at Cassino in May 1944. It then advanced and then broke through the Gothic Line. In February 1945, the Corps left Italy and was sent to northwest Europe.
New Zealand Corps
New Zealand Corps
This corps was created in February 1944. It took part in the second and third battles of Cassino. It was dissolved at the end of March 1944.
US Corps
II Corps
This corps served in Italy from November 1943 until May 1945. It took part in the first battle of Cassino and later in the breakthrough of the Gustav Line. It then advanced to the Gothic Line and participated in the final offensive in April 1945.
IV Corps
This corps served in Italy from June 1944 until May 1945. It participated in the advance to the Gothic Line and the final offensive in April 1945.
VI Corps
This corps served in Italy from September 1943 until August 1944. It landed at Salerno and advanced to the Gustav Line. The corps then conducted the landings at Anzio in January 1944 until it broke out in May and captured Rome in June 1944. It was then withdrawn to prepare for the Allied landings in southern France in August 1944.
French Corps
Corps Expéditionnaire Français
This corps served in Italy from December 1943 until August 1944. It fought in the first battle of Cassino and the later breakthrough of the Gustave Line in May 1944. In August 1944, it left Italy to take part in the invasion of southern France.
Polish Corps
Drugi Korpus Wojska Polskiego
This corps served in Italy from December 1943 until May 1945. It participated in the breakthrough of the Gustav Line at Cassino in May 1944 before advancing along the Adriatic coast through Ancona. It took part in the assault on the Gothic Line and the final offensive in Italy in the spring of 1945.
Italian Corps
Corpo Italiano di Liberazione
The corps was created in March 1944. It served on the Adriatic coast during the advance to the Gothic Line. In September 1944, the unit was disbanded.
