9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers – War Diary May 1944

1st May 1944 – 63127999

Divisional Commander, Major-General G.W.R. Templer, DSO, OBE visited the battalion. No special parade, visited companies on training.


2nd May 1944

Lieutenant-General R.G.W.H. Stone CBE, DSO, MC, GOC. BTE visited battalion. No special parade. Normal platoon and company training.


3rd May 1944

Companies having one day leave per week – transport taking them to Cairo.


4th – 15th May 1944

Normal platoon and company training. Drill parades held twice a week in preparation for Albuhera Day.


16th May 1944

Albuhera Day. Battalion paraded with 8th Royal Fusiliers. Inspected and marched past Brigadier F.F. Brewster CBE, DSO, MC took the salute.

Divisional Commander and various officers from the Division were present.

Remainder of day spent on inter-battalion sports.


17th – 23rd May 1944

Normal platoon and company training.

24th May 1944

Empire Day. Church parade and sports at El Alamein Club. Day off for battalion.


25th – 29th May 1944

Normal platoon and company training.


30th May 1944

Normal platoon and company training. 48 hours leave in Alexandria started.

31st May 1944

Normal training.
